On the golf course you will be faced with a multitude of dilemmas, what distance is it to that bunker, can I get over that pond, what will the wind do to this? Will I hit this one!
To help us with these choices we are allowed to carry up to 14 clubs in our bag with every club designed to do different jobs. A standard set of clubs consists of 1 wood or driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, #3 iron - #9 iron pitching wedge, sand iron and putter leaving space for a speciality club. i.e. 1 iron, driving iron, 7 wood, 9 wood, chipper, gap wedge etc.
Woods are designed to go further than irons with the lower the number indicating the lower the ball flight. The lower the ball flight the further the ball goes but the harder it is to use so you have a dilemma shall I go for distance or control. As you get closer to the green a higher lofted club is used to elevate the ball into the air reducing the distance and enabling the ball to land softly on the green.
Once a consistent swing has been achieved you can learn how far you hit each individual club, try and base this on your average shot.
Use the chart below to assess your distance so when you get on the course you will have a better idea of what club to use. The difference in clubs is usually between 8-16 yards per club.
